A common topic of discussion between adults and children alike, weather is one of the most relevant and relatable topics that Kindergartners study. This website is home to a series of lessons we are collectively calling Weather Watch, designed to review and build upon basic weather concepts that Kindergarten students may have already learned in preschool. We then take things a step further by having students consider and document larger weather patterns and concepts.

The activity pages are written and designed with students in mind. These pages -- Introduction, Flash Cards, Jeopardy, Prezi, Graphing, and Search -- feature an introductory blurb describing the upcoming activity to students, followed by notes for teachers further down the page. After familiarizing yourself with our activities and guidelines, feel free to allow students to explore the previously mentioned pages on their own!

The activities provided will help engage young learners in tracking weather, forecasting their predictions, and learning about the various systems and phenomena we call weather. We will cover two content areas with these lessons: Science and Mathematics. Specifically, the standards we address are:

  • Science Curriculum Connections:

    • K.E.1 Understand change and observable patterns of weather that occur from day to day and throughout the year. 

      • K.E.1.1 Infer that change is something that happens to many things in the environment based on observations made using one or more of their senses.  

      • K.E.1.2 Summarize daily weather conditions noting changes that occur from day to day and throughout the year.  

      • K.E.1.3 Compare weather patterns that occur from season to season 

  • Math Curriculum Connections

    • K.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality. 

    • K.MD.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories 

 

All featured activities are designed to build off of classroom studies as students work in small groups with an instructor to explore websites, presentations, and more. As they explore and complete these activities and learn directly about weather, students will also be inherently practicing incorporating their life experiences and classroom knowledge with self-generated knowledge that they create through research and online interactions.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Paris is majoring in Child Development and will graduate with her Bachelor’s degree and Birth-Kindergarten teaching license in December 2018. She is currently employed as a preschool after-school teacher at Rainbow Community School in Asheville, NC. Preschool is Paris’ favorite age to work with, and she is glad to have experience to work with this group while simultaneously learning about them in her courses.

Ashley is working towards completing her Bachelors in Elementary Education at Appalachian State University. While she is not currently teaching she has 10 years of teaching experience covering birth to Pre-K ages. She is looking forward to returning to the classroom in the near future after her two children become students themselves, hopefully in a HeadStart classroom.  She has really enjoyed having her children be able to help her with some of her school work and to use as guinea pigs.
