Learning new weather words

Freeze! First thing's first: read Freddy the Frogcaster with your teacher. Once you have read this story and talked with your class about all the new words you learned, you will be ready to create your own set of flash cards. Flash cards are a helpful way to learn new words. The flash cards you create will stay in the reading center so that you can look back at them any time.

This is a full class activity.

Printable guide available in Teacher Zone

Notes for instruction:

Please refer to the printable guide located in the Teacher Zone for a list of materials and detailed instructions for implementation. This vocabulary activity is more extensive because it requires reading, transcribing, and teaching students how to use the flash card creation site.

This activity can be adjusted for different levels of knowledge and comfort. For example if you are confident in your students' abilities on the computer you can let them design the flash cards themselves. The words chosen are going to be based solely on the knowledge level of your class. If you have children who speak English as a second language or who are more visual learners you can also draw pictures on the cards before laminating them.  We recommend reviewing the words at least three times as a class during your unit on weather.

Higher order thinking questions, with hypothetical student responses below: Student answers will vary. Examples provided.

  1. Are flash cards a good way to learn words that you do not know? Why or why not?

    1. I think the flash cards are good because I can carry them around and use them whenever I want to. My parents can use them with me too.

    2. I didn't like them because it was too hard to remember what the words are without pictures.

  2. Can you imagine what would happen if the picnic had been ruined by snow? What signs could Freddy have looked for to tell him snow was coming? How could he have saved the picnic if it had snowed?

    1. Freddy could have looked for cold temperatures outside or the kind of clouds that make snow.

    2. If it snowed during the picnic he could move it inside somewhere or maybe they could have built snowmen and then warmed up inside.

  3. Freddy wanted to be a meteorologist. What do you want to be when you grow up? Why?

    1. I want to be a dentist because I want to help people keep their teeth clean.

    2. I want to be a fireman so that I can save people from fire.

  4. Can you think of another book in our classroom that we could make flash cards for? Any books that have words you do not understand?

    1. I think we should make one for "Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs." That book had a lot of big words that I don't understand.

    2. I wouldn't use the flash cards for other books because I don't like them.

  5. If you had to plan a picnic for your family how would you make sure the weather wasn't a problem?

    1. I would check the weather the day before and before we went outside or I would have it somewhere that has a roof.
